DALI IN HAZARDOUS AREAS

DALI stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. This designation highlights the enormous potential of this technology: With DALI, it is possible to digitally network, switch, control, and monitor individual lights as well as complete lighting systems. In addition to adapting the light to different environmental, weather or working conditions, pending maintenance, the temperature of the lights and many other parameters can be centrally recorded, logged and controlled. Are you wondering whether this also applies to hazardous areas? Sure, we'll help you!

TUBE OFF, LED ON

Since September 1st, 2023, T8 fluorescent lamps have been phased out in the EU. From this point on, fluorescent lamps may no longer be placed on the market. What does that mean for you and your system? We explain:

Why? On the one hand, the decision to phase out T8 fluorescent lamps in the EU takes into account technical progress, since there are now more energy-efficient solutions. On the other hand, environmental protection plays a role, since mercury, which is used in fluorescent lamps, poses a health and environmental problem, especially when it comes to disposal.

Who? This was decided by the EU Parliament in Brussels and passed with two directives. The ecodesign directive refers to the use of more efficient solutions and the RoHS "Restriction of the use of Hazardous Substances" regulates the ban on the use of mercury.

What implications? Although there are exceptions for the use of fluorescent lamps in such areas, the EU defines stricter requirements for these lamps. Operators must ensure that the fluorescent lamps used comply with the specified legislation and are suitable for the specific operating conditions or applications.

What advantages? Switching to LED lighting offers several advantages over fluorescent lighting. LED lamps are more energy efficient and consume about half as much electrical energy as fluorescent lamps with a comparable light output. In addition, LED lamps have a longer service life, which results in lower maintenance costs. In addition, LED lamps can be digitized and monitored, which simplifies inspection and maintenance.

Recommendation from R. STAHL? The switch from classic fluorescent lamps to modern LED lighting in industrial plants is being pushed further by the EU ban. Although there are exceptions for areas where there is a risk of explosion, there are many convincing arguments for the timely change to energy-efficient and long-lasting LED technology.

FAQs

1. What is the real service life of an LED luminaire?

LEDs have an average nominal lifespan of up to 100,000 hours. However, the actual lifespan depends on the individual usage duration. For example, a usage duration of 50,000 hours with a weekly lighting time of 60 hours results in a lifespan of approximately 16 years. LEDs do not simply fail, but become dimmer over time.

      2. What are the disadvantages of LED?

LEDs are initially expensive in terms of procurement costs, but ultimately the cost benefits of using modern LED technology far outstrip this in the long-term. These benefits can be easily established via our TCO-/ ROI calculator.

      3. Should we wait a little longer before using LED?

No. LED technology is the most cost-effective and the most up-to-date lighting technology in the market. When you switch as early as possible, the long operating life ensures great cost benefits. Quick decisions will save you maintenance costs as well.

      4. Do LED luminaires cause damage to the eyes?

No. All LED luminaires are subject to the EU Directive 2006/25/EC and are tested in accordance with EN 62471. This inspection must be confirmed with the EU declaration of conformity. When using LED luminaires which meet these criteria, there is no riskof eye damage.

      5. What effects does LED lighting have on light emissions and does this harm the environment?

      R. STAHL's luminaires are developed in line with the guidelines issued by the IDA (International Dark Sky Association). This means that their radiation angles are configured such that no light is emitted towards the upper hemisphere, thus preventing light pollution. In line with EN 12464, the light is only emitted in the directions in which it is needed in order to fulfil the user's lighting requirements.

      R. STAHL also produces luminaires that block shortwave radiation (specifically UV and blue light), as this kind of radiation has a tendency to attract insects. Ongoing investigations into the possible harmful effects of light on animals are a major focus at
      R. STAHL, and the findings of these investigations are incorporated into the design of our luminaires.
