Secure Grounding Systems for hazardous areas

FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers) are often used in the logistics of bulky goods. Depending on the material, these bulky goods need dust explosion protection. In these cases, special FIBC are used to prevent the ignition of electrostatic discharge. These are grounded at all times during loading and unloading.

The R. STAHL 8485 series of grounding monitoring devices have an operation mode that has been especially designed for this task. Automatic detection of the FIBC prevents incorrect operation, guaranteeing the risk-free use of the FIBC at all times.

Tank Wagons are one of the key drivers for the logistics of goods and intermediate products in the chemical and petrochemical industries. In these applications, electrostatic grounding is vital. Using a correctly designed contact to an earth rail, safe unloading is not a problem. Monitoring, however, is still recommended and even mandatory in some regions of the world.

Legislature demands vehicles to be grounded for any activity. Including connecting loading arms and hoses. R. STAHL’s 8485 series of grounding monitoring devices establish and confirm, through monitoring, safe grounding for the entire duration of the loading and unloading process.

The device also has an object recognition function. This means that the grounding monitoring device can detect if it’s connected to a truck. Approval is then only given if the vehicle has been recognised and the maximum leakage resistance is given. Incorrect operation is therefore prevented.

Moving flammable liquids in small containers can potentially lead to electrostatic charges. Processes such as filling and emptying the containers, or the use of mixers have a high potential to create positive electrostatic charges. The problems increase when containers are placed upon pallets, making secure grounding even more challenging.  

With their measuring method, the ground monitoring devices of the 8146 and 8150 series are more than suited for these applications and environments. The grounding is first established by the device and then continuously monitored.
