Ethernet-APL – time for a change of thinking!

Digitalisation, mobile communication, the Cloud, Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data and more are all terms on everyone's lips right now. However, so far the digital revolution seems to have passed by process automation altogether. So it's time for a change of thinking. After all, Ethernet-APL represents the dawn of a new era. Why? The following three questions and answers will tell you.

1. What exactly is Ethernet-APL?

Ethernet itself is a data transmission technology that enables data to be transmitted between different devices within a closed network. Ethernet-APL is therefore also a data transmission technology. The name stands for Ethernet Advanced Physical Layer.

This technology is based on the Physical Layer of Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) 10BASE-T1L in accordance with the IEEE Std 802.3cg-2019 specification. SPE uses two-wire conductors to bridge distances of up to 1000 metres with transfer rates of 10 Mbit/s and, optionally, to supply connected devices with power via PoDL (Power over Data Line). Ethernet-APL is similar to SPE but uses a supply concept that differs from PoDL for field devices, in order to enable use in hazardous areas with the intrinsic safety type of protection. Different plug connectors and clamping connections are also used in order to meet the requirements of process automation.

The solution is transparent for all Ethernet protocols, such as EtherNet/IP, HART-IP, OPC-UA and PROFINET. Additionally, the specification stipulates that fieldbus type A cables and existing shielding concepts can be used. This means that Ethernet-APL can be used in all areas, including all environments with an explosion hazard and in systems within the process industry.

Ethernet-APL at a glance

High data rates thanks to 10 Mbit/s full-duplex communication.

2-wire Ethernet guarantees simple connection, even in the field.

Sufficient power to supply 50 field devices via the 2-wire conductor with energy.

Cover large distances with a trunk length of up to 1000 m and spurs up to 200 m.

Designed for use in hazardous areas up to Zone 0.

2. How does Ethernet-APL work?

Ethernet-APL is compatible with the 10BASE-T1L specification from IEEE standard 802.3cg-2019. Furthermore, specific inspections and certifications ensure that devices from different manufacturers can work together interoperably in a single network. Ethernet-APL supports a range of topologies for use in the process industry, such as the trunk/spur architecture that you may be familiar with from fieldbus installations, as well as the star topology that has been used for Ethernet. Furthermore, the new explosion protection concept for intrinsic safety – 2-Wire Intrinsically Safe Ethernet (2-WISE) – is based on the tried-and-tested FISCO (Fieldbus Intrinsically Safe Concept).

When installing Ethernet-APL using a trunk/spur technology, the power switch supplies the network with approximately 90 W and is responsible for conversion from 4-wire Ethernet to 2-wire Ethernet. This is where the field switches are connected. They are supplied via the trunk and provide the remaining available galvanically isolated energy to the field devices with intrinsically safe type of protection. In this configuration, each trunk, power switch to field switch, or field switch to field switch connection can be up to 1000 m long and the spurs can be up to 200 m long. Alternatively, externally supplied field switches can be used, which then work directly on 4-wire Ethernet with a transfer rate of, for instance, 100 MBit/s.

3. Why do you need Ethernet-APL?

Users and operators require a standardised network all the way to the field level in order to digitalise their systems. Large amounts of process data and increasing quantities of diagnostic and asset management data must be transmitted over some large distances in real time. New concepts such as NAMUR Open Architecture (NOA) and the Open Process Automation Standard (O-PAS™) require a powerful, flexible infrastructure. Devices and systems should be available on the basis of globally standardised technology from as many manufacturers as possible and act interoperably with one another.

For control system suppliers, the design of modern automation structures is much simpler with Ethernet-APL. This enables new, high-performance concepts for process control, system diagnostics and plant asset management to be created. Higher bandwidths all the way into the field offer new, comprehensive functionality and can provide real added value. This results in modern, future-proof systems with improved productivity and quality in a competitive environment.

A consistent Ethernet infrastructure in process systems simplifies planning, commissioning and troubleshooting for the EPC and system integrator. Changes and modifications can be made significantly more quickly and flexibly than in most current, inhomogeneous field installations. Ethernet-APL supports the known trunk/spur topology and the use of established communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, HART-IP, OPC UA and PROFINET – this simplifies integration in existing and new systems.

Ethernet-APL opens up new opportunities when it comes to developing field devices. At bandwidths of 10 MBit/s, device manufacturers can design additional features and applications that offer their customers a real advantage. A variety of tools and services are already available as standard as IEEE-compliant Ethernet. The new 2-WISE concept for intrinsically safe Ethernet systems is based on an international standard that offers the user complete interoperability for installation in hazardous areas.
