    EMERGENCY LIGHTING GUIDE FOR OPERATORS

Emergency lighting saves lives – but only if it is planned, tested and documented in line with standards. Our Emergency Lighting Guide provides a concise summary of all the key regulations, test cycles and obligations for operators – covering planning and installation, through to maintenance and documentation. This keeps you in line with standards and up to date with the latest technology, while ensuring that you can successfully pass audits.

    1. LAWS & STANDARDS

    • Many standards and regulations apply to emergency lighting. These contain requirements for the lighting system itself, the light fittings as a product and the use of them as part of the emergency lighting system.
    • Experts help to design emergency lighting in line with standards and to ensure that existing systems also conform to standards.

    2. PLANNING & INSTALLATION

    • The planner and operator of the system are responsible for defining escape routes and providing lighting for them.
    • The requirements for the lighting system are described in EN 1838.
    • Installation must be carried out by trained qualified personnel.

    3. TESTING & DOCUMENTATION

    • EN 50172 describes checks and tests which must be performed at the defined intervals.
    • The results of the tests must be documented in writing.
    • The tests can also be documented automatically using a digital solution like DALI.

    4. OVERHAUL & MAINTENANCE

    • Planned maintenance activities on the emergency lighting system help to avoid unplanned downtime.
    • Light sources, operating electronics or batteries in the lighting system should be replaced on time.

    5. ORGANISATION & RESPONSIBILITY

    • Responsibilities for operating and maintaining the emergency lighting system must be clearly defined.
    • Standards require all measures to be recorded correctly and a log book to be kept. This documentation may need to be presented during audits and checks.

    6. INFORMATION & TRAINING

    • Regular attendance at training sessions held by supervisors helps to stay up to date with standards and regulations.
    • Testing and simulating an emergency can help you to act efficiently and confidently in a real emergency situation.
